Lightly breaded, truly fried golden brown. Well my friend got them, I trade a shrimp for a couple of them. I never get clamstrips in restaurants one's I have tried were too boring like Ho-Jo's of the past. When she came back she confirmed they were fresh and breaded in house. He asked the waitress and she didn't know said she eats them all the time and they are great but she'd check w/kitchen. When I see fresh on a menu I actually am a little skeptical. All the times I have eaten there never tried them. One of the others got shrimp like I did but the other person noticed that the clam strips said fresh breaded. Have always gotten a very large flounder filet and it was great. I didn't try it but will say I have gotten their fried flounder platter many times. She didn't like that the black skin was still on the pieces. Even though the coating looked great it wasn't crispy. Unfortunately I think it may have not been fried to order. My wife's fish/chips special looked great. My dish came w/two large hush puppies house made and as good a hushpuppy as I have ever had. She was getting a lunch special of fish/chips which didn't come w/a side. I knew I wasn't going to need sides so I just got a side salad as one side and my wife got a side salad to. I got the larger order w/10 shrimp, the other option is 6. If a plater or entrée you get a choice of two sides most lunch dishes you get one side. They do serve their dinner entrees during the lunch times as well. They bread them in house, and I'd guess they are U12-15's. They are as good as any fried shrimp I have ever had on the east coast. Have stated in other Surfrider reviews but still swear by them. None of the fresh fish interested me so I got their fried shrimp. I was looking forward to having them but they were out. Not a Surfrider but one of our favorite restaurants, they were fine but as I told the other's dinning w/me they weren't as good as Surfriders. I had had fried soft shells earlier in the week over in Va Bch. The large windows facing the water and light colored décor make the place very inviting. This location has been open for over 10 yrs but still looks very fresh inside. Restaurant much slower then typical lunch time during the work week. Had lunch w/another couple on a recent Saturday. Very nice location back in Blue Water Yachts on the Hampton River/Sunset Creek. Live on the peninsula so more often now eat at the Hampton location. When still working ate mainly at a Va Bch and Chesapeake location. I am sure tropical cocktails are a real specialty here and there definitely is a full bar.Īll in all, I really enjoyed my Surf Rider experience and would “hang ten” here again sometime! Good atmosphere and service, good food at decent prices, and great water views! I would give Surf Rider in Hampton 4.2 Stars out of 5 for a very good experience at a casual restaurant.I have been going to various Surfrider's for over a decade. There was a decent beer list and small wine list with fair prices. The Grilled Yellow Fin Tuna sandwich was wonderful though! Very fresh, cooked medium rare the way I like it, and it was a big sandwich that included fries for $11. The flavors were fine but for $5.99 for a cup of soup, I expected more. I was unimpressed with the soup and think I got the bottom of the pot because I didn’t find any clam at all. I ordered a cup of Maryland Clam Chowder and a Grilled Yellow Fin Tuna Sandwich which comes with a side. Award winning Crab Cakes, Shrimp, Scallops, Oysters, Crab, and more! The fish selection seemed a little light with choices of Tuna or Flounder but the “Catch of the Day” does include specialty fish on other days. The main part of the menu (and the priciest) is the House Specialties which is directed to the Seafood lover. The menu had several categories such as Starters and Appetizers, Soup and Salads, Sandwiches and Wraps, Pasta’s, Burgers, Turf, and Platters fill up every craving you may have in your soul. Surf Rider has a very large menu with many different choices of food and at a variety of prices but the average price was from $8 for a sandwich to about $25 for seafood. Service was quick and I got a table right away with a menu and a water with lemon. It was a Thursday at 1pm lunch time and it was quite busy. Casual atmosphere inside with a beachy theme, nautical signage, and a bar area at the end of the restaurant was overlooking the marina and the water. The Surf Rider name is what interested me since I have always considered myself a misplaced California surfer boy so I wanted to ride the largest wave right to the restaurant! Instead, the Surf Rider in Hampton was located in a nice marina right on the water with nice views of the Hampton River.
